Charleston's "world class" reputation is partially derived from her vibrant arts and cultural scene. At the Flagship, we leverage our co-working facility by extending the natural connection between the arts and business/technology community. The Flagship Gallery facilitates the development of Charleston's up and coming contemporary artists by providing them an additional outlet to display their work through the Flagship Gallery initiative.
Kristen Solecki translates small moments and stories into paintings and illustrations with strong, changeable line work. She works with a variety of clients creating paintings for gallery exhibits, spot illustrations for print, and private commissions.
She received her BFA in illustration from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She now lives in Charleston, SC where she was featured in the City Paper as an artist to watch in the 2012 Fall Arts Issue. For more information about her work please visit her website.
Austin Grace Smith is an eighth generation Summervillian who resides in downtown Charleston, SC. She has pursued art since childhood and graduated from the College of Charleston with a B.A. in Studio Art. Dedicated to creating and selling her original artwork, she continues to enjoy the creative process. She has been featured at both solo and group art shows here in the Lowcountry, including Piccolo Spoleto 2012. Austin is inspired daily by nature’s beauty in the sea, sand and sky.
Tina Hirsig brings the traditional art practices of drawing and printmaking together with the assemblage of found objects. Her artwork contemplates the beauty that lies in the brief transition between the coming and going of life; both melancholy and joy. Originally from Wheaton, Illinois and spending ten years in Boston, the artist moved to Charleston, SC in 2003. With a strong background in arts education, Hirsig now teaches at both the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College. To learn more about the artist visit her website.
Kathryn Dale Barton is a South Carolina based artist who works out of Tivoli Studios, a contemporary art space on King Street. Her process begins by painting geometrical patterns on wood panels or canvas. Using color and composition, she captures the essence of her subject matter and paints them into the background in search of balance. By allowing instinct to guide her, she embraces the challenge of each layer, letting the work develop naturally. Not always easily, but naturally. To learn more on the artist visit her website.
Kirsten Moran grew up in a little brown house in North central Massachusetts. There, she became infused with an appreciation for all life and its fleeting nature. What shaped her aesthetically then, and continues to this day, is the origin of memory and the deep feeling of belonging: ancestrally and in the here and now. How these sensations resurface, manifests in her work through impressions that feel ancient. There is a dialogue present that extends beyond the corporeality of the body and enters the soul. Kirsten has a B.F.A in Painting and a B.A. in Cinema from Binghamton University. She is currently an M.F.A. Painting candidate at Savannah College of Art and Design. For additional information on the artist please visit her website and Facebook page.
Xin Lu received her BA from Vanderbilt University in studio arts and psychology. Her mixed media monoprints are inspired by her childhood memories and recent travels to her home country of China. Lu’s works are imbued with a sense of longing for a place to belong. She was the recipient of the prestigious Margaret Stonewall Wooldride Hamblet Award. Lu is represented by Cumberland Gallery in Nashville TN. She currently has a studio at Redux in Charleston SC. Read the artist's statement on her website.
Lisa Shimko hails from rural south central Pennsylvania. She holds a BFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Lisa now resides in Charleston, SC, and she also freelances as a graphic designer, research and educational writer.
Sarah Boyts Yoder is a mixed media painter living and working in Charleston, SC. Sarah uses materials ranging from pencil and house paint to pages from vintage coloring books to create her multilayered, mixed media paintings. A love for color, collage, design and typography drive the search for a balance between sophistication and simplicity, and cartoon-like expression and eloquent abstraction. A small artist reception will be held on September 8th. For more information on this event, please visit our calendar.
Deborah Sisco studied Fine Art at the College of Charleston. Her work has been displayed throughout Charleston, including the at the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Indoor Exhibit (2010), the North Charleston Arts Festival Group Exhibit and at the Charleston City Gallery Group Exhibit "Vanishing Landscapes" (2008). Sisco believes art is a compilation of our conscience and unconscious mind. It is what we experience in our everyday lives and what we dream of at night. It is how we touch reality and how we lose ourselves to our imaginations.
Hirona Matsuda has been showing her assemblages since graduating in 2007 with degrees in Anthropology and Art. Hirona primarily uses found or salvaged objects piecing together scenes that are often representational.
Nina's fascination with the worn and aged is present in her pieces. Oftentimes her photographs are stained with tea or coffee and then decorated with dried flowers or vintage lace.
Kristy Bishop spends her summers road tripping across the US. Kristy has returned to Charleston where she continues to find inspiration from local flora and fauna. She incorporates oil painting, using broad brush strokes and vibrant color, with sewing, embroidery, and fabric dye to create her artwork.
Sarah Frierson graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2008 with a BFA in Painting. Her paintings, combining oil and encaustic techniques, illustrate forgotten and recovered memories, and moments in time.
Kenton James' figurative oil paintings are emotional scenes conveying both calm and anxiety, stillness and fear. The paintings are best described as a type of 'visual noir,' a screenshot, a detail, of a much more elaborate scene, which engages the viewer to imagine and subjectively rewrite the surrounding narrative.
Born in Appleton, Wisconsin, raised on both coasts, and trained as a Biological Engineer (no kidding….), James currently lives and works downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Kenton’s paintings and sketches are regularly available at SCOOP Studios or at his website.
Johnny Tucker: registered Architect, voter, and operator of motor vehicles (not exceeding 26,000 lbs.); unregistered artist, bicyclist, book collector, film addict, Franco & Italophile, and food/wine lover/snob.
Helen Rice: I wake up, I drink coffee, I water the garden, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I sit at the computer, I clean things, I eat food, I go to sleep.
Christopher creates bold and colorful abstract paintings that go beyond pure design to explore contemporary culture and the collective human experience. A recognized artist, Murphy participates in multiple art events and exhibitions both regionally and nationally.
Most recently, he had a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Washington, DC. His dramatic abstracts enjoy strong reviews consistently. Murphy's art expresses the essence of subjects through this hidden visual language. And it is on this level, that the viewer responds so strongly.
Christopher Murphy’s works can be seen and purchased on a regular basis at SCOOP Studios at 57 ½ Broad Street. t: 843.577.3292
